A great new sci-fi film is coming up – “Transcendence” and here is a super write up! Sci-fi has consistently given insights into the Future, and it is hoped technological developments such as the ones described in this film will have built in safeguards! Extract:

And then one evening something terrible and sudden and shocking and tragic happens… and that’s when “Transcendence” begins morphing into a thriller of the mind and soul with echoes of everything from “A.I.” to “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” to “2001: A Space Odyssey” to “Blade Runner” to “The Matrix.”

Vistas Bharat:  My Favorite Movies! Continued extract:

“…Cillian Murphy is the FBI agent convinced the A.I. version of Will is going to accumulate so much power and intelligence he’ll become the greatest threat to freedom the world has ever known.

It is already giving me the shivers!

Having watched the trailers on its website, it is clear to me that the idea of the Singularity, when machine and human intelligence merge, posed by Scientist Kurzweil in his ground breaking book “The Singularity is Near” and site has caught on and is being mainstreamed by Hollywood (Kurzweil believes human intelligence can be uploaded and preserved forever so that Death itself is banished).  Seems like each new technology is more powerful than the last but with the potential for bad outcomes growing exponentially. The consequences of the Singularity or Transcendence are frightening but so was nuclear power, and humanity managed to control nightmare scenarios. Getting nostalgic for another great movie on the topic of runaway nuclear: “Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.”

Will Bollywood wake up please?
